Spectrum of Etiologies Causing Hydrometrocolpos
BACKGROUND Hydrometrocolpos (HMC) develops as a result of vaginal outflow obstruction and the accumulation of secretions. It might be secondary to persistent cloaca, urogenital sinus, some syndromes, presence of the vaginal septum, vaginal atresia, and imperforate hymen. Each of them has different treatment options and follow-up protocols. This study was performed to identify the etiology and t...
متن کاملCHAPTER 114 Hydrometrocolpos
Introduction Hydrocolpos is an uncommon congenital disorder consisting of cystic dilatation of the vagina caused by obstruction of the distal genital tract, resulting in retained fluid. If there is also associated uterine enlargement, the term hydrometrocolpos is applied. Vaginal obstruction may result from a high vaginal septum, varying degrees of vaginal atresia, cloacal malformations, or an ...
متن کاملUnilateral Breast Edema: Spectrum of Etiologies and Imaging Appearances
Breast edema is defined as a mammographic pattern of skin thickening, increased parenchymal density, and interstitial marking. It can be caused by benign or malignant diseases, as a result of a tumor in the dermal lymphatics of the breast, lymphatic congestion caused by breast, lymphatic drainage obstruction, or by congestive heart failure. Here we describe several conditions, that cause unilat...
متن کاملA Case of Hydrometrocolpos and Polydactyly
Neonatal hydrometrocolpos (HMC) is a rare Mullerian duct anomaly with an incidence of 0.006%. It occurs due to blockage of the vagina with accumulation of mucus secretions proximal to the obstacle. These secretions are secondary to intrauterine and postnatal stimulation of uterine and cervical glands by maternal estrogens. A triad of congenital HMC, polydactyly, and cardiac anomalies are the ca...
متن کاملPrenatal diagnosis of hydrometrocolpos in a Down syndrome fetus.
We report the prenatal sonographic diagnosis of hydrometrocolpos caused by an imperforate hymen in a Down syndrome fetus, with spontaneous evacuation on the third day of life. In this case, sonographic evaluation in the 37th week revealed a large retrovesical, sharply marginated, heterogeneous, unilocular cystic structure within the fetal abdomen extending to the left side of the umbilicus.
